- Using the VM6470/VM6480 Overlay And Other Tips
- For All CBTerm Users
-
-
- The main purpose of these notes was to explain how to properly
- install the VM6470/VM6480 CBTerm overlay for owners of those modems
- to maximize their use with CBTerm. However, these notes include tips
- that apply equally well to other CBTerm users.
-
- Whenever I use C= below I am referring to the Commodore Logo key.
- CBTerm sets various functions by holding this key down with a second
- key at the same time. C=2 Hangs up the Phone. C=3 Autodials.
- C=5 toggles the dialing mode for various modems.
-
-
- Fast Loading
- Before continuing I would like to point out that CBTerm works well
- and efficiently with the Epyx Fastload cartridge. I would strongly suggest
- any users without it to get it if they are using a 1541 drive. I would also
- like to point out that CBTerm is not, unfortunately, fully compatable with
- the Final Cartridge. The VM6470/VM6480 modems are definitely not
- compatable with the Final Cartridge WITH ANY software. It appears that
- the Final Cartridge has a bad habit of causing these modems to pick-up the
- phone line at the worst of times.

-
- Files You Should Have
- CBTerm (CBT66.BIN in DL 12)
- CBTFKeys Overlay (CBTFKE.BIN in DL 12)
- CBterm Customizer (CBTCUS.BIN in DL 12)
- VM6470/VM6480 Overlay (VM6480.BIN in DL 12) (Revised Oct 25/87)
- (If you have a VM6470 or VM6480 modem)
- Seikosha SP1000VC Overlay (SEIKO.BIN in DL 12)
- (If you have a Seikosha SP1000VC Printer)
-
- You may also want various other utilities from DL 8, in particular
- CBTDDL & CBTKOA for saving Hires RLE screens in the Doodle & Koala formats,
- H2RLE to convert Hires screens to RLE format, and RLEDSP to view RLE files
- offline.

- Customizing CBTerm for Auto-Dialing
- If you have a Volks VM6470 or VM6480 modem use the C=L key to load
- the VM6480 overlay. Once the overlay is loaded you should press C=5 to
- toggle the dialing mode if you have a VM6470 instead of a VM6480 modem.
- You should check that the auto-dial feature works by pressing C=3 and
- giving a number to dial. If the line rings, but the carrier is not
- detected try hanging up (C=2), toggling the mode (C=5), and try again.
- Once carrier is detected simply hang-up (C=2). Of course the number
- dialed must be to another computer with auto answer for this to work.
-
- You should then customize your function key settings if you have not
- done this before. Load the CBTFKeys overlay with the C=L key. Access the
- overlay with the C= Pound Sign keys. This overlay always uses a 40 column
- mode, but you will return to the 80 column mode when you exit the overlay
- if you were in the 80 column mode before entering it. The overlay also
- works in the same colors, always- Yellow, Black, and Red.
-
- Then you can simply enter information into the function keys f1-f6 by
- pressing the appropriate key. You can enter anything into the area, except
- that only one <CR> is allowed. You can enter control characters by holding
- the CTRL key with the characters, and symbols will be used to show the
- characters. (IE: A bell for CTRL-G). You can end entry into the function
- key with the return key, which also leaves an ending CR in the key, or you
- can end entry by pressing the run-stop key which DOES NOT add an ending CR
- to the key. Thus if you enter f1 as: Hi<space><run-stop>, and f2 as:
- Bob<CR> then pressing the f1 and f2 keys from CBTerm would list Hi Bob on
- one line, and do a CR after Bob, instead of displaying Hi and Bob on two
- separate lines.
-
- You can make any, or all of the f1-f6 keys autodial keys. To do so
- press the function key to start entry into it, then PRESS C=3 (normally used
- to start auto-dials from CBTerm), and the 1st character should change to
- red. Then enter the number, and exit entry with CR. THE AUTODIAL NUMBER
- SHOULD APPEAR IN RED.
-
- I normally set my keys thus:
-
- f1- CPS<CR> My response to the host prompt.
- f3- My User Id<CR>
- f5- My Password<CR>
- f6- An Auto-Dial #<CR>
-
- You can then set f2 and f4 to whatever else you want- IE: Go CBMCOM<CR>
- You can display your function key settings with the D key while in this
- overlay from the > prompt. P shows a list of Prg type files on your disk,
- and F shows a list of files (Seq type). Any function key settings you have
- saved will appear as Seq-type files, so the easiest way to find them is with
- the F key. The H reply (Help) to the > prompt re-displays the initial screen
- with brief notes on these and other commands available, and also displays
- your current function key settings.
-
- You can exit back to CBTerm from the > prompt by just pressing return,
- or by pressing the run-stop key. (Just as you exited entry from each
- function key).
-
-
-
- Saving It All
- You should then continue to set-up all of the other parameters you want
- to use for a given service, mainframe, or BBS. Set your colour choices,
- your 40/80 column mode preference, Caps mode toggle if you want to work
- strictly in upper case mode, etc.
- Once you have all the settings you want for a particular service you
- should then load the customizer as an overlay with the C=L key. You can
- continue toggling various settings after the customizer is loaded if you
- want. Once you are satisfied with your settings exit the customizer with
- the C= Pound Sign Key. Reply to each of the prompts, then you should
- enter Basic. At that point you should save your work under a different
- name than the original- in fact I suggest saving several versions for
- different systems. IE: DPTerm for DataPac, DECTerm to access a DEC
- mainframe etc. All of your settings, including your function keys, will
- be saved with CBTerm. You can re-enter CBTerm by typing: Run.
-
- IF YOU HAVE A VM6470 or VM6480 then definitely DO NOT ERASE THE
- ORIGINAL VERSION OF CBTERM you have, as you may need it should you decide
- to get another modem.
-
-
- ge WITH ANY software. It appears that
- the Final Cartridge has a bad habit of causing these modems to pic
